Applying for VSNA Approval for
Contact Hours

Dear Applicant:

Here on our website you will find the guidelines for applying for approval to award contact hours from the Vermont State Nurses' Association, Inc.'s Committee on Education (VSNA COE).  Please note that all applications must follow current criteria required by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Education.  These criteria become effective January 1, 2007.

There are two types of applications, Educational Activity and Provider of Continuing Education in Nursing:

  1. Approval for an educational activity is for a two-year period during which the activity may be repeated an unlimited number of times.  All the forms you need for this application can be downloaded here on our website.

  2. Approval as a provider is recognition of a provider’s capacity to award contact hours for continuing education activities which are planned, implemented, and evaluated by the provider.  The provider may offer an unlimited number of educational activities during the three-year period of approval.  (See eligibility criteria for providers.)   If you are interested in becoming a provider, application materials may be obtained by calling or e-mailing the VSNA office.

Three (3) copies of the application and all attachments are needed for the review as one copy is retained in the office and the other copies go to the reviewers.  Payment should be sent with the application and is not refundable once the review process has begun.  RETROACTIVE CREDIT CANNOT BE AWARDED.  Fees are based on the type of application and number of contact hours expected plus any late fees:

Fee Per Number of Contact Hours
0.1-4 Contact Hours $100
4.1-10 $150
10.1-20 $200
20.1-30 $300
30.1-50 $400
50.1 $500
Provider (Until July 30, 2008) $1125**
Provider (Effective August 1, 2008) $1250**
Late Fee (Until July 30, 2008) $100*
Lat Fee (Effective August 1, 2008) $250*

*A late fee should be included with the fee for an application that is sent less than 30 days prior to the activity.  Completion of the review CANNOT BE GUARANTEED on applications received less than 21 days prior to the activity, even when a late fee has been included.  If the application is withdrawn before it has been reviewed, VSNA will retain a $25 Administrative Fee.  PLEASE NOTE: RETROACTIVE CREDIT CANNOT BE GIVEN.

**A provider application should be submitted at least 60 days prior to the date you expect to be approved.

THE APPLICANT MAY NOT ADVERTISE CONTACT HOURS UNTIL THE REVIEW PROCESS HAS BEEN COMPLETED.

The VSNA COE welcomes your comments about the application process for obtaining contact hours.   Also, for quality improvement purposes, two members of the VSNA COE may request to attend the educational activity at no charge but they will be responsible for paying any meal costs.

Sincerely,

Deborah Hayward-Sanguinetti, RN, MS
